You may already know that, due to decreased demand and a quieter season, winter is one of the best times to design your custom pool. And you certainly know just how beneficial having a backyard pool can be, both for your health and personal enjoyment. But when it finally comes time to design your pool, you may not be so sure what your “dream pool” even looks like!
We understand this dilemma. While most of us would like having a pool in our backyards, we don’t always know where to start when it comes to deciding on shapes, sizes or additional landscape features. Fortunately, there are ways to make the process a little easier. We will be exploring a few of them below.
Do your research
While much of the pool designing process has to do with personal preferences and stylistic choices, there’s also lots of research to be done as well. Take care of this ahead of time so you know how big you can build, what your budget can offer you, and other key details.
During the research period, it may also help you to research different types of pools to get an idea of what you may be interested in (if you don’t already have something in mind!). Are you looking for an exercise-friendly pool? Or one that’s better suited for fun and recreation? Look through owner reviews and comments to see what others have to say about their design choices.
Pay attention to your friends’ or neighbors’ pools
If you’re considering designing a pool of your own, pay special attention to the pools your friends, family or neighbors already have in their backyards. This is a fantastic way to see what’s out there and what you may be interested in. You can literally “test the waters” to see what type, shape or style of pool suits you best. When you enter the pool design process with a clear idea of what you want, you can achieve the results you want more easily.
Know your wants and needs
Of course, in addition to research and word of mouth, you need to make your pool design decisions with one key idea in mind—the preferences of you and your family! Since you’re the ones who will be using the pool most frequently, it is crucial that you design the pool to meet your needs and preferences (and not necessarily the ones that seem to be most popular in your neighborhood). Take some time to imagine yourself in your “dream pool.” Are you exercising, or lounging with friends and family? Is it a small, easy to care for pool or a large and extravagant one with an intricate landscape? There’s no “perfect” standard to follow here—the best pool, after all, is the one that works best with you and your family!
